Hi Paul - cheers for posting a comment! I think the sliding is sometimes the fun bit, I’m sure the reason I keep on top of work as effectively as I do is that I see all my notes and tasks at least once a month as I move to yet another text editor or task manager. Although, now I’ve developed my own, and realise it’s possible to build my own usable software, I may not flit as much as I used to. But then again, that sliding sure is fun…

I saw kid on a sliding plastic thing where he could skid from one end to the other - like being on ice but warm and with plastic. He would zoom from one end to the other, loving the the sliding and balancing. I think we are all permanently on a dry-slide between “I will do this completely free” and “I just want it to work today”. And like the kid, we just dont want to get off. Glad someone else is going through it too !

It’s a bit different to PHP, but I learnt OO programming many moons ago using Smalltalk and it’s a very similar syntax. Just need an idea for a massive-selling iPhone app now…

I know what you mean - while people I work for need me to use Flash I won't be able to do without running OS X.

I think a middle ground is now feasible - running Ubuntu in Parallels on the Mac so I can access apps I can't get as free software if I need them. Ubuntu runs just about as nicely in a VM as it does when installed dual-boot, so I reckon this may be my approach for a little while.

i know you and i talked about linux a while back; i have always maintained this OS - and particularly Ubuntu will become a dominant force and i think we’re seeing this. With the merging of desktop and web, the actual OS becomes less important. There are many web apps out there that will help get things done, irrelevant of OS.

that being said, i can’t operate without Photoshop, lightroom and Dreamweaver. I can’t currently do that natively on Linux. Sure there are things like GIMP which are helping redress the balance, but today I don’t have the tools to be truly effective as I would on Win or Mac. It’s only a matter of time though.

Thanks John - I’ve been reading your blog for a while. There didn’t seem to be many other pike/lure fishing blogs out there so I thought I’d give it a go. I’d like to work some of the articles up into something a bit more hefty at some point and keeping a blog seems the best way to get into the writing habit.
